The Curling isn't quite finished yet

European Masters

Our Ice might be up, but competitions are still going on else where. Tom and his team qualified for the European Masters in Switzerland. This visit to Switzerland wasn't  as successful as previous comps had been, with Tom bowing out at the group stage with a single victory over Team Smith, also in his group were Team De Cruz, from Switzerland and this years world finalists Team Ulsrud of Norway and current World Champions Team Edin of Sweden. The final was competed between two teams from this group though, as Edin edged Smith in the final.

World Mixed Doubles

This is a relatively new forma of the game, referring  to the World Curling Federation website for this part.....

Instead of playing in Teams of four, mixed doubles curling is for Teams of two players – one male and one female (no alternate/substitute player is allowed).

- The game is played on the same sheets of ice as “traditional” curling.
- Teams have only six stones each (instead of eight) and one of those stones, from each team, is prepositioned on the centreline before each end of play starts.
- Player one delivers the first and last stones and player two plays the second, third and fourth stones. If they choose to, the two players may swap positions from one end to the next.
- Sweeping can be done by both team members.
- Each team receives 22 minutes of thinking time and games are scheduled for 8 ends – compared to 38 minutes and 10 ends for “traditional‟ curling.
Understand it? you can watch a few of Team Scotland games at the Worlds here on the YouTube channel. Husband and Wife duo Lee & Judith McCleary are representing Scotland this year out in Sochi.

World Senior Championships

Our own Kay Gibb is representing Scotland this year at the World Seniors, in Russia. She has also taken Curl Aberdeen Member, Judith Carr, out to Sochi as her Alternate. Currently they sit joint top of their section. This event is alongside the World Mixed Doubles out in Russia, there are no YouTube coverage, but you can read all about the games via the RCCC website.
The men are being represented by Gordon Muirhead, and are on one loss so far but are currently 5-0 up on Italy in the 4th end.
